Automatic video captions

Release date: 14th August 2024

This Content Hub release introduces automated AI video caption generation to remove the time-consuming process of manually transcribing audio in videos and help to:

  • Improve accessibility of your Web content by enabling hearing-impaired users access to video content
  • Enhance your SEO performance by ensuring that your videos are discoverable and visible in search results
  • Improve video engagement rates – captions ensure your message reaches your audience when it’s not possible or convenient to listen to the audio
  • Adhere to accessibility laws such as "The European Accessibility Act" in the European Union and the "Websites and Software Applications Accessibility Act" in the US
Caption generation and Amplience credits

This feature requires Amplience credits for generating video captions at a rate of 5 credits per minute. More about Amplience credits.

To automate video caption generation, you first enable a profile to generate video captions. See setting captions options for transcoding profiles.

The profile captions options

You can use "captions enabled" profiles to generate captions automatically as part of bulk upload processes, or manually to uploaded files (as shown below).

Available transcoding profiles

Each video can have one "captions enabled" profile.

Generated captions are saved as Video Text Track (VTT) files that contain a transcript of the audio track along with time codes that sync the captions to the video.

Once captions are generated you can quickly check them from Content Hub by previewing videos:

Using Amplience credits

When you manually apply a "captions enabled" profile to a video in Content Hub, we first check your Amplience credit balance to ensure you have enough credits before generating the captions.

If you run out of credits while generating captions during a bulk upload, captions will continue to be created until all credits are used up. You can check the status of caption generation for bulk uploads from the "Tools > Activity queue".

Previewing captions that have been generated using profiles doesn't require credits.
